Jeff went to the 12th International Conference of Virtual Reality
This summer, I had the special experience of joining the 12th International Conference of Virtual Reality in Cardiff, Wales, where I was able to meet interdisciplinary colleagues from many different countries, research domains, and institutes.
The experience was great, and I was happy to present our paper, “Detecting Breaks in Presence: A Single-Session Feasibility Study for Detrended Fluctuation Analysis in Virtual Reality”.
The presentation addressed the question of how the framework we used to measure presence in our two previous papers could be applied in practice to measure subjective experiences in single sessions and individual users, and how calibration might improve the level of detail we can achieve.

To my pleasant surprise, there was a small competition for the best presentation at the end of the conference. When my name was called, I was both surprised and happy that I had managed to convey the intangible concept of presence, and the arguably even less tangible concept of how we apply our algorithm to measure it using body movements, to a mixed audience of researchers from different fields.
So, with a little prize in my luggage, I returned to the European mainland and look forward to the next experiment on measuring presence in VR!
